Flash and bang

We were in a thunder storm. You can tell how far away it is by timing the gap between the flash of lightening and the rumble, or bang, of thunder.
Then I was asked how long it was for me between the flash and the bang.

That's about a mile for every 5 seconds or a kilometer for every 3 seconds.
